Many moons ago I started down the path to better sound.  The journey began back in the 1970's in my hometown of Oconto, Wisconsin.  In those days it was Speakerlab kits that ruled the house and Jensen Coaxials that rocked the cars.  It seems hifi stereo was everywhere, what glorious memories.  My friend Dave built a set of 11 cu/ft speakers using all Speakerlab drivers and utilizing the then new Theil/Small Parameters.  Best sound in town ..... and still is to this day, 25 years later!  Hornloaded midrange/tweeters, 15 woofers, 99db at 1 watt, sound is breathtaking.  Dynamics baby!  Everywhere you looked somebody was building and tweaking hi-fi gear.  I remember building my first set of speaker cabinets for my "blue surround" 6X9 Jensen's from factory plans.  104 dB at 2 watts is what they said on the box (just bought a pair of NOS on EBay).  These drivers where something special back then and by today standards they remain outstanding.  Check out Jensen's current line of car audio speakers and look how inefficient they are now.  Examine the current parade of Home Loudspeakers, endless black boxes that are as dynamic as a K-Mart vacuum.  What happened to the kick, the slam, the fun?  Why have loudspeakers become less and less efficient over the years?  This has bothered me to no end and the simple answer is ... cost.  Its costs less to build a less efficient driver.  That's it, Capitalism has made my loudspeakers weak! Large Multi-National Companies can save pennies per thousand on materials and shipping weight.  Was it because the transistor amps hit the magic goal of "a dollar a watt".  (Thanks Mr. Carver we needed that like a whole in the head).  Who knows, who cares, its a complicated grey subject matter.  What I do know is by the late 90's I had thousands of dollars worth of "hi-end" components, hi-tech speakers and my cat would not even sit in the room when my system played.  Houston we have a problem.  Midlife audio crisis.  What I really missed was the clean dynamic music I grew up with.  It was this frustration that bought my first pair of Single Ended Triode Amps. (What was I thinking)!   Now the search was on for a pair of effecient loudspeakers to make them sing. What came next was a freak show of the strange and down right bizarre. Bar none, every speaker I tried lacked something or had serious flaws.  Every one said, ya but you got to understand, this is to be expected with super effecient speakers.  Excuses layered on excuses, undaunted I pushed on.
